Recreation Around Loring and Naha Bay Alaska

The town of Loring and Naha Bay are located in the heart of the Tongass Rainforest. The Tongass Rainforest spans 17 million acres along the glacially carved coast of southeast Alaska and consists of an amazing abundance and variation of vegitation, and land and marine wildlife.

Land wildlife which can be seen in the Loring and Naha Bay area include black bear, Sitka deer, wolf, martin and mink.

Marine life around Loring and Naha Bay includes Humpback whales, Orcas, porporses, seals and sea lions, 5 species of pacific salmon (King, Silver, Sockeye, Chum and Pink), halibut and red snapper.

The area also has abundent dungeness crab and shrimp.

loring and naha bay naha river Adjacent to Loring at the head of Naha Bay you will find the Naha River. The Naha River is one of southeast alaska's top fishing rivers. Here you will find two steelhead runs (in spring and autumn), trout, rainbow trout, cutthroat trout, Dolly Varden and 4 species of salmon (from mid July to the end of september).

The Naha River is easily accesible along the boadwalk trail constructed in the 1930's by the CCC. The trail starts at the Forest Service dock in Naha Bay and goes around Roosevelt Lagoon and along the river up to Jordon and Heckman Lakes. The trail makes the Naha River ideal for a wide range of activities including fishing, hiking, wildlife viewing and photography.

Loring, Naha Bay and the Naha River are remote from the road system and so the only way to vsit the area for the day is by chartering a float plane from operators such as Carlin Air or Family Air or by chartering or renting a boat from Knudson Cove Marina, or Clover Pass Resort.

For those looking to staying longer in Loring or Naha Bay, there is a choice of two small lodges; Naha Bay Outdoor Adventures, Saltery lodge, a rustic rental cabin; Porpoise Inn, and a Bed and Breakfast Stack's Clan House Inn.
